Ten Pin Bottle~Pre-Prohibition~Elk Grove Winery
I have for you today, not only a great old bottle, but a story to go with it.....so get comfy, grab your favorite beverage and lets start story hour.....
One HOT HOT HOT day last month, my wonderful husband was working in an excavator on a job site. There he is sweating away (cuz his boss is too cheap to fix the AC in the machine) digging a huge hole for the 10th time (cuz his boss has no idea what he is doing and changed his mind 10 times), Now, on this tenth run over the same plot of land, he see's something shimmering in the sun (that is swealtering, mind you) so, he gets out of the machine and picks up this neat looking green bottle. He says to himself, "Well my wonderful wife (he better have said that!!!) would really like this. She loves old glass, and this one looks old, so I will bring it to her, along with the iodine bottle I found buried here last week, and maybe I can stop working for this moron who runs me all over the place for no reason!! Ha! This is my ticket out!!"
So, the dear man brings it home, and I said, "yep, it's a dirty green bottle!" Then, upon further inspection, I see the writting on it. It reads
"L'Hermitage Brand California
Muscatel.....(blah, blah, blah)
Produced and bottled by Elk Grove Winery....(blah, blah, blah)
Tax Paid by stamps affixed to case"
So, I went to a very reputable board here on Ebay & found that this, is indeed a collectable old bottle. Made pre-prohibition. This type of bottle is called a ten pin bottle (for the shape). I also found that the Elk Grove Winery was put out of business by Prohibition! So, if you are a collector, here is your chance! Take it home today!!
****Morals to be learned here??****
1) Don't pass up the opportunity to get something great, just cuz you have to get a little dirty!
2) Always trust that your wife will look into your finds AND confirm your belief that "this is worth something!"
3) NEVER, NEVER, NEVER work for a moron who makes you work in a non-air conditioned machine in 100 degree heat!
Story time is over......!
